Business Central users have 1 April deadline to move to Microsoft Edge

Business Central users have until 1^st of April 2021 to switch their browser and move to Microsoft Edge. This is because as from 2^nd of April, Internet Explorer 11 (IE11) and Microsoft Edge Legacy will no longer be included on Business Central’s list of supported browsers.

This follows the announcement in August last year (2020) that Microsoft 365 apps and services would stop supporting Internet Explorer 11 by August this year. Since then, multiple Microsoft apps have stopped supported IE11. The Microsoft Teams web app stopped supporting it in November 2020. The Microsoft Edge Legacy desktop app will not receive new security updates after the 9^th of March 2021. Business Central will no longer support IE11 or Microsoft Legacy as from 2^nd of April. All remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will stop supporting IE 11 as from 17 August 2021.

The new Microsoft Edge, that supersedes Edge Legacy, offers Internet Explorer mode for backward compatibility. All Business Central customers, whether they are Business Central SaaS customers or on-premise customers who upgrade to the April 2021 major update of Business Central, will need to move to make the switch to the Microsoft Edge browser.

According to Microsoft, the “new Microsoft Edge is built on the open-source Chromium project, the same foundation used by Chrome. This means that sites will perform the same on Microsoft Edge as they do on Chrome, and that you likely won’t experience the traditional compatibility problems you saw with IE.”

What to do next?

Moving your default browser to Microsoft Edge is simple and can be done by any user, not just the admin.

To do this on Windows 10:

1. Select the Start button, and then type Default apps.
2. In the search results, select Default apps.
3. Under Web browser, select the browser currently listed, and then select Microsoft Edge or another browser.
