Collectively, ambitious businesses tend to talk a lot about the increase of customer demand, the changing pace of the modern workplace, and the importance of digital transformation.

With access to more product choice and information than ever before, as well as devices to receive these by, as customers ourselves, we don’t have the time, patience or desire for poor service or poor user experience.

With the same kind of demand and expectation shown in the workplace, employees want to work smarter, more effectively and agile where possible.

What is Digital Transformation?

Firstly, you may be wondering what digital transformation is anyway. Here to explain is our Accounts & Business Development Manager, Karen Moore recorded at our 2019 Summit:

Reflecting this in your business, here’s how to achieve success when implementing your digital transformation project.

What are your goals?

Before starting a project or contacting potential partners, you’ll need to think about what it is you want your business to achieve.

If it’s more than just replacing legacy systems or staying on budget, you’ll need to set solid, measurable KPIs.

You can do this using the SMART method – which is: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely.

These could therefore be (adding your relevant timescales):

  1. Move to the Cloud in order to eliminate the higher cost of on premise hardware and receive regular updates
  2. Start using AI to help with cash flow and forecasting
  3. Effectively plan and manage employee capacity and projects using Jobs and Resources to save time and money
  4. Cut administration time by automating lengthy manual processes
  5. Make better business decisions by improving data and reporting, using real time information (i.e. Power BI)

You can find further guidance on KPIs here.

Future Proofing

Future proofing your business is key to your long-term success. Holding off on an upgrade, even for a short while, could lead to you missing essential updates or improvements in technology – slowing or even stopping your growth.

Mentioned by Karen in our video and also as an example by Microsoft, their research shows that “81 percent of executives believe Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be integral to their business in two years. 31 percent of enterprises say AI is on the agenda for the next 12 months, yet only 15 percent of enterprises are currently using AI.”

Demonstrating that even though there may not currently be place for certain technologies within your business, such as AI, it doesn’t mean there won’t be at some point soon.

Thinking beyond your day-to-day and becoming an early adopter could put you in good stead for the future.

Not just IT

Digital projects and implementations aren’t just for the realms of IT. Classed as organisational change, these projects affect everyone in the business.

To achieve project success, it’s therefore vital to understand and accept this, as well as secure maximum boardroom engagement.

Aligning IT and business leaders throughout the journey will help create an organisation open to change. This is because managers who are open minded will help employees see future benefits without dwelling too much on the past. A practice what you preach situation, if you will.
